The Assist For Youth project, which Assist has been running since 2022 to develop youth basketball in South Korea. One of the project’s participants, Kim Geun-hyung from Samsung Basketball Classroom in Bundang, played a key role in the qualifiers for the first grade middle school division of the 2023 Hongcheon Mugunghwa Cup Youth Basketball Club Championship.
Currently enrolled at KIS Foreign School, Kim plays the role of point guard for the team. Taking his role as an on-court commander very seriously, Kim played a key role in giving Bundang Samsung their first win of the tournament.
Bundang Samsung suffered an unfortunate setback against Ansan TOP in the first round of the qualifiers, losing 37-40. However, they bounced back with a 40-26 win over their second opponent, Hanam Korea.
Kim Geun-hyung orchestrated the game as the team’s point guard, and Bundang Samsung pushed Hanam Korea hard from the start to secure a valuable first point.
“I’ve been playing basketball at Bundang Samsung for about four years,” said Kim Geun-hyung after the victory. We prepared hard for this tournament. In the first game, we had an unexpected blow from Ansan TOP, so we needed to win, and I think we won because my teammates played hard,” he said, attributing the victory to his teammates.
Kim Geun-hyung, whose main goal was to have fun while playing a good game, said, “It was the second game for everyone, so it must have been physically demanding, but they worked really hard. I felt a lot of responsibility to do better because I was playing with my teammates. From the beginning of the game, I could feel that we were in sync with our teammates, and I think that’s why we were able to win the game,” he said, adding that he felt a great sense of solidarity with his teammates.
Although it was difficult because some of his teammates were injured, the valuable victory gave him confidence for the final match of the qualifiers against Wonju DB on the 23rd.
“I’m grateful to have such good friends on the same team as me. As this is a big tournament, I will do my best until the last game tomorrow so that I can build good memories with my friends,” he said.
