The protagonists are Tyler Rogers, 33, and his brother, a San Francisco bullpen pitcher. They are identical twins who were brought together this season when their older brother was traded to San Francisco.
The Rogers brothers pitched in relief for the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 2023 Major League Baseball game at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on 17 July.
Younger brother Tyler was the first to go. He took the mound as the team’s third pitcher in the top of the eighth inning with a 3-2 lead. Tyler got off to a shaky start. After giving up a leadoff single to Andrew McCutchen, he gave up back-to-back walks to Carlos Santana and Henry Davis to load the bases. He then gave up a sacrifice fly to Jared Triolo to tie the game at 3-3.
His younger brother, Tyler Rogers, came off the mound in relief.
San Francisco had runners on first and third with one out after Tyler left the bases loaded. The team switched to his brother, Taylor, to try and prevent further damage. It wasn’t easy, but Taylor got Tucupita Marcano to swing and miss. He then gave up a single to Nick Gonzalez to load the bases, but induced a swinging strikeout of Jason Delay to end the threat.
Not to be outdone, San Francisco scored five more runs in the top of the 10th to take an 8-3 lead, and although they gave up a run in the bottom of the 10th to make it 8-4, they were able to hold on for the win. Younger brother Tyler picked up the blown save, but was fortunate not to take the loss thanks to a strong outing from older brother Taylor.
The older brother, Taylor Rogers, solved the crisis his younger brother created.
After the game, MLB.com, the official website of Major League Baseball, wrote about the Rogers brothers. “Tyler applauded his brother’s performance,” it said, “as he got out of the jam.
In an interview, Taylor said, “I didn’t think any differently about (the crisis he created). It probably makes for a good storyline, but I still feel the same way. If you save the game-winner for somebody, you feel good, and if you don’t, you feel bad.”
Teammates lavished praise on the Rogers brothers’ story. “That was a great moment,” infielder J.D. Davis said, “it was a brotherly moment (for his brother to come through).
San Francisco, meanwhile, won its fifth straight game to improve to 52-41 on the season. The Giants are now 1.5 games back of the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.
