‘0 errors vs 8’…Korea women’s baseball dominates on defense, beats Hong Kong 18-2 in cold open

The South Korean women’s national baseball team swept host Hong Kong.

The Korean women’s baseball team defeated Hong Kong 18-2 in five innings on Tuesday (June 30) at Sai Sowan Baseball Stadium in Hong Kong to win the 2023 Asian Cup (BFA).

The Koreans had 13 hits on the day, while Hong Kong had eight. Despite the difference in hits, the difference in runs scored was due to Hong Kong’s eight defensive errors. The national team, on the other hand, finished the game with no errors. “The defense was the difference in the game,” said head coach Yang Sang-moon after the game.

The Chinese team scored two runs in the first inning. They gave up a run in the second, but came back with two runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead. They exploded for five runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-1 lead, and despite giving up one run again, they put the game away with a nine-run fifth inning.

It was a game of self-destruction for Hong Kong, despite a focused batting lineup, solid defense, and strong pitching. Despite being down just one run, 2-1, in the second inning, Hong Kong was impatient and missed a series of fly balls and made a series of throwing errors.

In the end, the team went cold, capitalizing on an error in the fourth inning to create a big inning, and scored nine runs in the fifth inning to win by 16 runs.

In a batting lineup that pounded out 13 hits on the day, Ahn Soo-ji went 5-for-5 with a double and an RBI, Yang Seo-jin went 3-for-3 with an RBI, Joo Eun-jeong went 2-for-1 with an RBI, Kim Hyun-ah went 4-for-3 with an RBI, Jang Yoon-seo went 3-for-1 with an RBI, and Choi Dre went 3-for-2 with an RBI.

The pitching staff was also strong. Kwak Min-jung pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, Ono Sayuri pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, Kim Bomi pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief, and Lee Yoo-jin pitched 1 inning of scoreless relief. After coming on with the bases loaded in the second inning, Sayuri Ono retired the remaining batters to earn the win.

The team will play the second game of the Super Round against the world’s second-ranked team, Chinese Taipei, on March 31 at 7 p.m. (KST). If the team defeats Chinese Taipei, they will advance to the final.

The team is determined to go all out against Chinese Taipei. “We’re going to put everything on the line against Chinese Taipei,” said head coach Yang Sang-moon. If the team advances to the final, they will secure the silver medal. It would be their best result ever. The previous best result was a bronze medal (3rd place) at the 2017 Asian Cup (BFA).
